Eating with the seasons - May/June
Now that the days are getting shorter and the weather a little cooler we can feel winter creeping in. It’s not all bad news though as a new season means lots of great fresh produce and all those yummy winter favourites. Here is a selection of what’s good in June: potatoes, pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots, silverbeet, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, beetroot, apples (granny smiths, golden delicious & johnathons), fresh dates, lemons, limes & kiwi fruit.
You’ve heard an apple a day keeps the doctor away and while it might take a little more than a daily apple to maintain good health it’s certainly a step in the right direction. For the biggest benefit eat the skin as nearly half the vitamin C content is in the skin. Eating the skin also increases soluble fiber content which actually helps to reduce cholesterol build up in the lining of blood vessel walls, reducing the risk of clogged arteries, heart attacks and strokes. I say get stuck into all those lovely apples. For those that like their apples made into something special have a look in the recipe file for our Apple Tarte Tartin, it’s delicious.
